The Mavic Pro is the smallest camera-equipped quadcopter in DJI’s drone line-up.

Quadcopter Parts List | What You Need to Build a DIY Quadcopter


For someone new to the multirotor hobby, putting together your first quadcopter parts list can be extremely daunting. Trying to figure out what to buy and what parts will work together is tough, especially for people who don’t come from a background in radio controlled planes or helicopters. Forums are packed with people who want to build a quadcopter  but don’t know where to start. It can be frustrating trying to sort through the thousands of posts on forums and blogs and figure out what to do. We’ve heard from a lot of readers who are in similar positions and this post is designed to spell out exactly what you need for your first quadcopter build. While we will recommend a complete list of specific parts that we have used and tested for a complete quadcopter build, the main purpose of this post is to provide a general overview of the parts needed to build a quadcopter. Here’s what you’ll need:
  1. Frame
  2. Motor x4
  3. Electronic Speed Control (ESC) x4
  4. Flight Control Board
  5. Radio transmitter and receiver
  6. Propeller x4 (2 clockwise and 2 counter-clockwise)
  7. Battery & Charger
You will also need some miscellaneous things like zipties, double sided tape and/or velcro, a small amount of heavy gauge wire, battery strap, and some female to female servo leads or jumper wires. As far as tools go, you will want to have access to a soldering iron, small screwdrivers, hex wrenches, needle-nose pliers, and a hot glue gun. Drones are a big job opportunity; but for new engineers, not so much

The unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) market is already huge, and it’s getting bigger—fast.
The Teal Group estimates that production of combat, commercial, and consumer drones will triple over the next 10 years to US $93 billion, with military UAV research spending adding another $30 billion over the decade. “The commercial market is still nascent,” says Philip Finnegan, Teal’s director of corporate affairs. “Even as the commercial market develops, it will not reach the size of the military market anytime soon.” Still, MarketsandMarkets, another research firm, expects the commercial drone market to reach $1.27 billion by 2020, a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 109.31 percent between 2014 and 2020.
Impressive numbers, but they don’t seem to be helping engineering students and recent graduates who are interested in a career in drone design and development.

WHERE THE JOBS ARE

The defense/aerospace UAV sector is hiring aggressively, but most job descriptions call for engineering “talent” with several years of experience, and a load of skill sets. And a security clearance, which means the job applicant must be a U.S. citizen.
Raytheon Intelligence, Information and Services is looking for a principal/senior systems engineer for its UAV program with at least 10 years of experience, familiarity with UAV command and control systems, his or her own list of U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) customer contacts, and a U.S. government-approved Secret-level security clearance.  Raytheon also is in the market for senior systems engineers with at least six years of experience, and a U.S. military background in planning UAV missions and piloting UAVs.
Northrop Grumman’s Aerospace Systems Sector says it needs “experienced” UAV engineers skilled in communications systems, radar systems, guidance/navigation/control, UAV control and mission management software, and cyber software. A recent list of the company’s job openings for engineering graduates is much shorter, including a “new grad” software engineer, but still requires a master’s degree in computer science, computer engineering, or information systems. Northrop also needed a “junior” EE with a bachelor’s degree who can obtain and maintain a TS/SCI (Top Secret/Sensitive Compartmented Information) security clearance.
Google-owned Titan Aerospace is looking for an application software engineer with at least a master’s degree in computer science (a Ph.D is preferred), and experience in building ground control stations for UAVs. Google also needs experienced software engineers for its Project Wing who already know how to design complete UAV software stacks. Most other drone designers and developers (DJI Technology, L-3 Communications,  3D Robotics, General Dynamics, Israel Aerospace Industries, Elbit Systems Ltd., AeroVironment, and Yuneec International, to name a few) have similar engineering staff requirements.

    I think the vastly polarized reviews on the Bebop, ultimately come down to expectations and if people are willing to put in the effort to go online and read the online manual. I bought the Bebop as a replacement to a cheaper camera-equipped quadcopter from China that had a motor burn out within a week. I had so much fun flying the cheaper version that I wanted something a little more stable and easier to fly and capture video, but I wasn’t willing to shell out over a grand for a DJI Phantom yet. I can say that I am really happy with the Bebop for the price point, it does exactly what I need/want it to do. Is it the absolute best, no, but I also knew that when I bought it for $300 less than a comparable DJI Phantom Vision.

Battery life is the most important factor to consider. When you’ll fly a quadcopter the last thing you want is for your drone to be dead within minutes of use. There are a few considerations focusing on battery life.

Battery life- 

Some copters can fly for 6-7 minutes and others 10-12 minutes earlier than needing to be grounded and recharged. You must recognize how long your battery will last before buying quadcopter.

Replacement batteries–

Whether for a spare that may be used when a battery has died or simply if a battery is no longer retaining the charge, replacement batteries are very essential. So, determine if replacement batteries are available and where you can purchase them.

Charging time- 

Flying a drone for 5 minutes having to charge it again for 2 hours just to play with it 5 more minutes, may sound discouraging. Many drone models will take 2 hours to recharge, so keep this in mind.

2. Budget

Drones supposed for personal and recreational purposes can go for less than $100, while those intended for business or other specialized tasks can cost in the hundreds of thousands.
But, it’s really important to note that beginners may discover it frustrating to learn how to fly inexpensive drones because they lack some of the functions that make flying simpler. For example, the toy-grade drones lack GPS; an important function that guarantees stable flight for filming.
Because drones can be prone to crashing, you have to remember to leave room in your budget for any important maintenance or repairs.

3. Camera Quality

Whether you are an amateur photographer or a novice film-maker you must need the best camera quality in your quadcopter. The drone camera type available is a major consideration. While some models come with their own digital camera, others will need a product like a GoPro attached to them. Live feed of the video that is being taken isn’t always available with all drones. In reality, quadcopter cameras which have live feed are more expensive but worth every penny. The feed will go over wi-fi and can be transmitted to a variety of devices.
Usually, the feed can be either given to a computer, tablet or smart-phone. Live feed may also be available right on the controller that is the great choice for accurate flying. When there isn’t a live feed present, videos are frequently stored on an SD Card or flash drive. That means unique videos may be virtually not possible to take for professional purposes.
Controllers which have an LCD display will often have a feed that is sent and allows you to see what the digital camera is shooting in real-time. If your main purpose is to take aerial videos at parties or of live news for the channel, this may be the most important factor of all.

5. Controllable Range

The range that you can control the quadcopter is very essential. Many only work with a remote distance of 30m. This is the farthest you’ll be able to control the drone with remote function. The more expensive models will have a further range available.

6. Quality of Material

This is one of the factors your budget may have a greater impact on. Low-price, toy-rated drones, are often not very long lasting. Its material ranges from ABS plastic to ordinary plastic, while higher-cost drones are manufactured from fiber glass and carbon. 7. Features

Auto-landing? Auto-go back? GPS? Perhaps automatic pre-programmed flights? There’s a huge variety of beneficial and fun features available out there.
The high-end models are now being provided with GPS capability, which allows the quadcopter to adjust for the wind or even call the helicopter back to its base. Usually, quadcopter designs are most utilized because they allow for refined control and stability while flying. Weight and dimensions also be a factor to consider. The heavier a copter, the greater power it’ll need to fly. But, heavier models generally do better when blasts of wind are present.

8. Height and Speed

If you have a drone that is supposed for taking live-action video during a baseball game, you may want to reach a height of 320 feet or so that you can capture the whole baseball field. But, if you are flying only for fun, 120 feet may also qualify.
Speed is another consideration. Usually, the speed of a drone may be 12 – 15 miles per hour. But, as stated before, you’re limited to the range of your controller. Speed may be a consideration if you want to take video of sport’s games, such as football, baseball or you want to follow your child as they run through the open field to make a family video.

9. Replacement Options

When acquiring a brand new drone, and if you intend on taking it anywhere and do lots of flights with it, ultimately you’ll need to replace some parts. Some models will not allow for an easy replacement that means they’re definitely useless if anything breaks or damaged.
As an alternative, you need to
make sure that you can purchase good enough replacement parts which are easily installed.
The most common replacements are-
  • Propellers that have been damaged
  • Batteries that have lost their ability to charge
  • Gears that have worn in the propellers

10. Drone Registration

According to US Federal Aviation administration a person who wants to fly any unmanned. Remote-controlled aircraft that weighs between 250 grams and more or less 25 kilograms has to sign up with the agency. But, it’s very important to note that all toy drones weigh less than 250 grams. Civil penalties for failing to do this can lead up to fines that can cross as high as $27,500. In the case of criminal penalties, one can receive a fine of up to $250,000 and/or 3 years in prison!
So, who want to get in trouble?  It’ll cost you only $5 to register on line. You are expected to preserve your drone below 400 feet and more than 5 miles away from any airport.
The law in Australia and the UK is much softer with only those using the drones for business purposes expected to register.
